We buy Star Wars Toys, Merch and Memorabilia
When Star Wars was released in 1977, George Lucas and 20th Century Fox planned for something almost unprecedented at the time. A deluge of merchandise that would include Star Wars toys, stationary, clothes, lunchboxes – you name it. If George Lucas could brand merchandise, he would do it!
Lucas offered the rights to many of the big toy firms, many turning it down until Kenner (a subsidiary to General Mills firm) saw the potential and took a punt to produce the 3.75 scaled action figure range.
Star Wars was released in May 1977 to huge approval becoming a worldwide smash hit overnight. Kids didn’t just want to see the movie, they wanted the toys! This demand caught Kenner flat footed and with so little time until Christmas to produce the 3.75 figure range, they decided to sell an empty Star Wars branded box. This was with an early bird certificate containing a stand and a voucher to mail away to receive 4 figures – Luke Skywalker, R2D2, Princess Leia and Chewbacca.
When the first wave of Star Wars toys hit in 1978 there were another eight figures, playsets and vehicles and the Kenner toy line was a smash hit making 100 million in the first year!
