The Real Ghostbusters toys line ran from 1986 to 1991, it was mainly related to the animated cartoon. However Ecto 1a and Ecto Charger were based on The Ghostbuster 2 film.
The Kenner line of The Real Ghostbusters first hit the stores fulfilling Christmas pre-orders in 1986 (notably the 1986 first print sold out in pre-orders). Later, the toys began to be put on shelves in January of 1987. The line continued being made and sold until the spring of 1991. It had ten waves of toys with at least one more planned. Notably the line ended during the Kenner and Hasbro merger in 1991.
Wave 1 was released in 1986 and hit shelves in early 1997 they included the original 4 Ghostbusters in their animated style.
The first wave features the ghostbusters in the classic overalls. These went on to become the most popular best selling releases of the entire wave releases. Each figure came with its own ghost and proton pack.
Few toy lines do not succeed without bad guys which meant Kenner started to release a variety of ghostly creations. Once Slimer and Mr Stay Puft had been released a variety of original characters followed nearly all exclusive to the toy line rather than the show.
They all had some kind of unique feature, from eyes popping, mouths moving, toilet lids moving that made them great fun to play with. A second wave, which was released with additions from wave 2, was released sometime in the spring of 1987 with three additional figures that weren’t featured on the cards: GhostZapper, Plush Ghost; Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Plush Ghost; Green Ghost (aka: Slimer) . This was followed by a third wave for the Christmas season of 1987.
A further 8 waves followed up until 1991, making The Real Ghostbusters one of Kenners most popular toy lines.
